New Releases Tackle Golden Globe Winners Head On

January 21, 2005

It's another light week for limited releases. However, several that won Golden Globes this past Sunday will see their theater counts increase.

Head-On - Reviews
A marriage of convenience between two Turks living in Germany is used to look at Turkish culture in that country. Winner of more than a dozen awards including five Lolas. The film opens tonight at the Angelika Film Center in New York City before expanding during the coming weeks.

A handful of other limited releases are also expanding to take advantage of Golden Globe Awards:

  • Sideways is getting its widest release so far at 699, but it will most likely still miss the top ten by a very narrow margin.
  • Hotel Rwanda didn't actually win any of the awards it was up for, but it still is expanding to 319 theatres.
  • Millon Dollar Baby adds 25 more theaters to its count, which now sits at 147. On a side note, I predict this film will again lead the Per Theater Average Charts and will finish with a better than $10,000 average for the sixth week in a row.
  • The Sea Inside expands from 12 to 15 and hopefully will get the audience it so richly deserves.

The big winner of the night, The Aviator is already in wide release but is expanding more, while fellow multiple award winner, Closer is too late into its run to gain any addition theatres.
