Sisterhood Start Their Vacations Early

June 1, 2005

Combining incredible reviews and one of the worst movie names ever, Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants gets an early start on the weekend with a Wednesday release.

I'm not a big fan of Wednesday releases, or any midweek release, except for event pictures - films that have the advance buzz that's been building since the project was first greenlit. For most films, it just means opening two days earlier than most people expect, leaving theaters mostly empty until Friday, and this film will be no different.

Helping its cause is its reviews, which are amazing at 86% positive. However, the main complaint is the lack of crossover appeal. Fans of the book and members of the target audience should love this movie, others should avoid it. And while this will hurt the film's box office potential, it should boost its home market sales. Also hurting the film's chances is the competition, which is still extreme.

So look for a little over $2 million tonight, a little under $2 million tomorrow and $10 million over the weekend.
