What Happened?

June 7, 2005

It looked like the box office was turning around, and while post-holiday slumps are common, this time it was so big that no film made it to the $10,000 club. The closest was Apres Vous, which brought in $25,504 in 3 theaters for a $8,501 average.

On the other hand, there were a few films that managed to reach a milestone during the past week.

  • Layer Cake reached $1 million during the weekend, and even though it has most likely peaked at the box office, it should still hit more milestones before its run is over.
  • Mad Hot Ballroom also reached $1 million over the weekend, but its per theater average is still strong enough that it may have room to grow.
  • The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill hit $2 million sometime during the midweek, a respectable figure for a documentary.
  • Walk on Water made it to $2 million over the weekend, but that's likely the last milestone that the film will cross.
  • Ladies in Lavender also hit $2 million over the weekend, but unlike the previous film, this one has at least one more milestone left to go.
