Movie Website Updates for July 8 - July 14

July 14, 2005

During the past week promotional websites for several movies were launched and some older ones added additional content. Here the list of this week's releases, a couple of new sites and few updates, including this week's winner, Skeleton Key - Official Site.

The 40-Year-Old Virgin
There is a new trailer on the site, and while it's an improvement over the old trailer I'm still hesitant about this film's potential.

Aeon Flux
The photo gallery was added to the site, but it's the animated intro that was the most interesting. I was a big fan of this cartoon, but the adaptation look less than stellar. The cartoon was so stylized that live action it just looks cheesy.

Bad News Bears
The production notes were added to the site. They talk about the usual subjects but it's hard to tell how well they sell the film since I'm already sold.

The Brothers Grimm
The high definition trailer is up, and it's worth the 180 meg download. And definitely download it cause you're going to want to see this one more than once.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
The movie opens tomorrow but there are still quite a few features still marked coming soon. Production notes, soundtrack and two of the five games. It is sill early in the day, so I'll check back just before I upload the column to see if there were any last minute additions.

The Devil's Rejects
Another sub-site was added, this time for Kahiki Palms.

Duma
This site has all the usual information and enough animation to not bore the surfer, but not enough to make the site stand out. I do really like the background music, on the other hand.

Fun with Dick and Jane
Just the trailer so farm, and I must say I'm not impressed. The film feels like it's trying too hard to be funny and doesn't have a natural flow.

Hooligans
A little light on features but there's enough animation and two full songs to mostly make up for that.

Into the Blue
The flash site launched today but there's no real new content.

Just Like Heaven
Just the poster so far.

The Island
There's a new intro to the site that shows more action, but deals less with the setup.

On the Outs
The site has all of the usual features but not much style. The section are given names relating to prison; the bios are called Holding Cell, synopsis is Intake, etc.

Red Eye
There's a new placeholder site but clicking enter site just takes you to the hold site.

Roll Bounce
The full trailer is online, but not on the site. You have to surf over to Apple.com to see it.

Secuestro Express
It looks like Miramax is finally learning that their ugly, beige websites are no way to promote a film. Granted, there's not more information on this site than their usual sites, but there's a lot more style.

Separate Lies
Typical Fox Searchlight placeholder site. The trailer looks intriguing and the film looks like one to keep your eye on.

The Skeleton Key
This is a good site ruined by an overzealous attempt to convince the audience that hoodoo / folk magic is real. It's not. There's the usual information on the site, (synopsis, cast & crew bios, image gallery, trailer, etc.) but the site also has three special features. I expect features like Folklore and Create Your Conjure to concentrate on the magical aspect, but it was disappointing that the video clip, "A Look Inside" spent less time dealing with movie than the hoodoo crap. The site is also quite interactive with a lot to explore, clicking on different parts of the site will show you a couple of clips, others will make spirits appear, play records, etc. The site failed to sell me on the movie, in fact, I am less likely to see the movie now than I was before the site launched. However, stylistically and technically, this is a great site and on those grounds alone it win the superstitious Weekly Website Award.

Supercross
The site just has the bare bones information, and does a really poor job at selling the film.

Tom Yung Goong
The site all of the usual information, but it is quite slow. There are a couple of extras like a behind the scenes look and comic book information marked coming soon.

Transporter 2
Just the synopsis and the trailer so far. I admit, I enjoyed the first movie way more than I should have and it looks like the sequel will have the same feel, same great car chases, same stylish fights, and without any of that pesky plot to get in the way.

Underclassman
Just the synopsis and the trailer. It looks pretty derivative of other high school undercover movies and there are way too many of those.

Undiscovered
Just the trailer so far.

Valiant
The regular features are up, as well as character bios, which are the heart of the site. Each of a dozen characters has the code name, size, special skill, notes, and short clip. There are also a couple of features marked coming soon, Activities and Downloads.

Waiting...
There's not much here at the moment with just the trailer, which is great, (although I wouldn't watch it while eating.) I should point out the blog and message boards are quite active and the little bit of style on the placeholder site is a good sign. I'm a huge fan of Ryan Reynolds and this film has a great cast so I'm really looking forward to this movie, however, that September release date is troublesome.

The Warrior
It's a Miramax site.

Wedding Crashers
No changes in a couple of weeks.
