Having Designs on Top Spot

January 15, 2004

The two documentaries about famous designer, Yves St. Laurent, finished first on the per theatre average this week. While its average of $15,385 was enough to take top spot, it is not particularly high for a movie opening in only one theatre and chances of mainstream success are not likely.

There was a more interesting battle for second place on the Per Theatre Charts between the re-release of The Battle of Algiers and the further expansion of Monster. Sunday estimates had Battle ahead by just one dollar, but final numbers were not quite as close. The Battle of Algiers took second place with $10,812 to Monster's $10,293. That result did more than double Monster's total box office, pushing it to $1.4 million.

This past week also saw some milestones reached for several Per Theatre Charts alumnus:

Girl with a Pearl Earring starring Scarlett Johansson crossed $1 million after one month in the theatres.
The Legend of Johnny Lingo also crossed $1 million, but it needed a lot more than one month to do it in.
The Cooler topped $2 million at the box office.
