SAG Celebrates a Decade of Excellence

February 23, 2004

The 10th Annual Screen Actor Guild Awards were handed out on Sunday, and there were a not a whole lost of surprises this year. At least not if you take the Golden Globe awards into consideration.

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role

Johnny Depp - Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

This award is a bit of a shock. Many people would say Johnny Depp performance in Pirates of the Caribbean was probably the single biggest reason for that film's success. However, comedic roles are often overlooked when award season roles around.

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role

Charlize Theron - Monster

This award, on the other hand, was not a shock. Critics were almost unanimous in their praise of Charlize Theron's work in this movie.

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role

Renée Zellweger - Cold Mountain

Cold Mountain was showered with Golden Globe nominations, only to be nearly shut out. In fact, it was Renée Zelleger's win that avoided the shut out. The makes her almost a lock for an Oscar. Personally I was hoping Keisha Castle-Hughes would win, but she should have plenty of chances in the future.

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role

Tim Robbins - Mystic River

Before the Golden Globes were announced this category was wide open. After Time Robbins won that award, this win becomes less of a surprise. And this win makes him the frontrunner for Sunday's Oscars.

Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture

Lord of the Rings: Return of the King

After the first two movies were nominated for this award but failed to win it, is comes as no surprise that Return of the King took the award.

On a side note:Patricia Clarkson failed to win any of her three nominations. It's not the first time this year that vote splitting may has cost a multiple nominee an award. Scarlett Johansson had a similar fate with the Golden Globes.
