Will there be a Passionate Response at the Box Office?

February 25, 2004

The most talked about movie in long time is being released tonight to correspond with Ash Wednesday. The Passions of the Christ has already broken records in 3006 theatres, the most for an independent movie. And with more than $10 million in advanced tickets sold it should open huge, $15 million tonight and $45 million for the weekend. But after the controversy and the hype die down the film will have to stand on quality. The reviews are not particularly strong; overall 53% positive isn't bad, but just 35% positive from the cream of the crop is telling. Plus, even the positive reviews say that this movie will be too violent for most people to sit through. And that will hurt long term success.
