International Details - Volver Vaults into Fourth Place

June 4, 2006

It turns out that the studio estimates for the top international films were very accurate with only minor deviations. The actual numbers for the top there are as follows:

  1. The Da Vinci Code - $91.04 million on 12,179 screens in 58 markets for a total of $317.52 million.
  2. X-Men: The Last Stand - $76.26 million on 8531 screens in 95 markets for a total of $76.26 million.
  3. Mission: Impossible 3 - $12.78 million on 5275 screens in 56 markets for a total of $182.98 million.
The one major change from the studio estimates was in fourth place as the Spanish film, Volver, grew by 15% to $4.55 million on 835 screens in 5 markets for a total of $21.33 million. The big surprise came in France where the film was up a massive 41% from its opened taking in $2.64 million on 333 screens for a two-week total of $5.53 million. Meanwhile, in Italy is was down a mere 16% to $1.11 million on 309 screens for a total of $3.30 million.

  • This meant Limit Of Love: Umizaru finished in fifth place on the overall charts, but its box office numbers were not adjusts leaving it with $4.32 million on 315 screens over the weekend for a total of $39.85 million in Japan so far.
  • The Wild opened in third place in the U.K. with $1.92 million on 430 screens. That was certainly better than most openings the film has had and pushed its international weekend to $3.21 million on 1386 screens in 32 markets for a total of $36.88 million. However, it is still not a good result compared to other CG movies.
  • Camping slipped another spot falling to seventh with $2.90 million on 612 screens in 3 markets for a total of $36.03 million after a month of release. Nearly all of that has come from its native France, including $2.69 million this past weekend.
  • Marie Antoinette made its international debut with an 8th place finish earning $2.82 million on 339 screens in 3 markets. Of that, $2.61 million came from 312 screens in France, not a surprise given the subject matter.
  • It turns out that studio estimated were a little optimistic when it came to Ice Age: The Meltdown. Instead of earning $3 million and fifth place, the film managed just $2.42 million on 2085 screens in 12 markets for a ninth place finish. However, with an international total of $434.59 million, this is just a minor difference in the grand scheme of things.
  • City Of Violence opened in third place in its native South Korea with $2.36 million on 280 screens over the weekend and $2.83 million in total.
  • Fanaa just missed the top ten when it opened here, and it just missed the top ten internationally as well. Its 11th place, $2.34 million debut on 447 screens in 17 markets makes it one of the best worldwide releases for a Indian film.
  • Poseidon opened in first place in Taiwan with $1.6 million on 145 screens, which helped its overall weekend haul climb by 37%. However, it still fell out of the top ten with just $2.10 million on 451 screens in 8 markets for a total fo $9.84 million.
  • Take the Lead re-entered the charts with $2.02 million on 1011 screens in 11 markets for a total of $16.75 million so far. The is mainly thanks to its third place opening in Australia with $1.07 million on 128 screens but it also opened in Germany but took in just $565,000 on 124 screens landing in seventh place.
  • Silent Hill lost seven spots falling to 14th with $1.60 million on 988 screens in 15 markets for a $26.27 million total. The film has yet to open in many major markets, include horror mad Spain, so there's plenty of life left in the film.
  • Memories Of Matsuko opened in third place in Japan with $1.42 million on 224 screens for 15th spot on the overall charts.
  • Asterix and the Vikings fell out of the top ten, again, despite growing 3% to $1.41 million on 912 screens in 8 markets for a total of $16.48 million. This growth mainly came from Germany where it was up 22% to $930,000 on 520 screens for a total of $2.83 million.
  • Comme T'y Es Belle dipped just a mere 11% this week, but that was enough for it to lose nearly 10 places falling from 8th to 17th. It did add $1.37 million on 366 screens in 3 markets to its total of $6.14 million, $5.65 million of which has come from France.
  • Memories Of Tomorrow was down just 1% in Japan Japan but slid a spot to 4th in the market with $1.34 million 265 screens for a total of $9.71 million. On the other hand, the film fell from 11th to 18th on the international charts, which emphasizes what a volatile week it was in the rankings.
  • Curious George finally got its international run started this weekend, but it wasn't worth the wait as it bombed in both major markets in debuted in. In the U.K. it managed 6th place with $614,000 on 319 screens while in Germany it had to settle for 8th with $553,000 on 346. Overall the film barely made the top twenty with $1.31 million on 747 screens in 4 markets.
  • Goal! surprised in Japan with a fifth place, $1.26 million opening on 401 screens. This is still a bad result, but not nearly as bad as the film has done in other markets. Japan is the only market the film is playing it at the moment, but since its international debut, it has made $20.81 million, well below studio expectations.
  • For Horowitz opened in fourth place in its native South Korea with $1.21 million on 281 screens over the weekend and $1.43 million in total.
  • Das Leben Der Anderen grew by another 28% to $944,000 on 203 screens taking sixth place in Germany and 22nd overall. So far the film has made $9.67 million in take market.

  • The Shaggy Dog re-entered the charts with $847,000 on 501 screens in 18 markets for a total of just $19.14 million. The film's best market was Holland where it finished in fifth place with just $196,000 on 40 screens, which is hardly a great result. On the other hand, it was miles ahead of the film's French debut where it opened in 17th place with just $177,000 on 111 screens, and that was for the full week.
  • Daisy opened in sixth place in Japan with $774,000 on 230 screens and has now made $7.49 million including its native South Korea.
  • Prime had one od the worst week-to-week performances on the charts down 14 spots to 26th. Overall the film added $763,000 on 452 screens in 8 markets to its international total of $43.93 million.
  • Also down 14 places was The Inside Man, which fell just 37% to $762,000 on 708 screens in 25 markets for an international total of $86.98 million.
  • Eight Below managed just $685,000 on 996 screens in 22 markets for a total of $35.81 million.
  • OSS 117: Le Caire Nid D'Espions barely remained in the top ten in France with $597,000 on 255 screens for a six week total of $16.39 million. Overall it made $642,000 on 271 screens in 3 markets for a total of $17.98 million.
  • Scary Movie 4 fell more places than any other film on this week's chart plummeting from 14th to 30th with $608,000 on 754 screens in 29 markets for an international total of $64.25 million. Only the original movie in the franchise earned more internationally and worldwide, which makes another installment a certainty.

  • The studio continues to update Nanny McPhee's international box office, which now stands at $74.2 million internationally. However, no details were given.
