Ominous Start

June 6, 2006

We have a very rare Tuesday opening this week as The Omen debuts in more than 2600 theatres tonight. The strategy is simple, take advantage of the 6/6/6 date, but will this work or has the studio made a terrible miscalculation?

The original earned good reviews but is consider more of a pulp film than a critical darling. On the other hand, the remake is being dismissed but most critics while a few others are praising it for being faithful to the source material. Overall, 31% is a bad, bad score, but it isn't even the worst remake to come out so far this summer.

As for its box office chances, I am not bullish in the least. It might not even finish first today and by the weekend it will be crushed by Cars, which should make more over the weekend than The Omen will make in total. Look for $3 to $4 million today, up to $10 million by Friday and another $15 million over the weekend.

Personally, I'm going to stay at home and re-read Good Omens instead.
