Howard To Direct "The Missing"

February 19th, 2003

Oscar-winning director Ron Howard (A Beautiful Mind) may have come to a stand-still with The Alamo, but his creative eye still sparkles towards the west. Howard has decided to direct The Missing for Revolution Studios (XXX), a western to be adapted from Thomas Eidson's novel The Last Ride. Casting has already been announced with Tommy Lee Jones and Cate Blanchett in the lead roles. The story centers on a young woman (Blanchett) whose father (Jones) returns to their hometown years after his absence.

Writer Ken Kaufman (Space Cowboys) has been hired to peg the script and Revolution is aiming for a March 2004 release. The Western has been rather out of date in theaters since Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven. But if the musical can be reinvented... Jones has next month's The Hunted to look forward to while Blanchett should have won the Oscar for her role in Elizabeth.
