Casting News for Garfield

March 2nd, 2003

Jon Arbuckle. When one hears that name they think of a perpetually single, hapless, fashion victim. And now Breckin Meyer will step into that enviable role for the Live-Action Garfield movie. Also close to signing a deal is Jennifer Love Hewitt who will play Jon Arbuckle’s love interest. It was not reported if she will play Dr. Liz Wilson, Garfield’s vet and frequent Jon rejecter, or if Jennifer Love Hewitt will play a new character, but it will mostly like be the former.

It is also not known at this time who will do the voice of Garfield. Whoever it is, they will have a hard time living up to the amazing voice work of Lorenzo Music. Lorenzo Music, who passed away in 2001, voiced the animated Garfield in 14 TV specials and the series Garfield and Friends, which ran for 7 years on CBS.

Garfield is the latest cartoon to make the leap to Live-Action movie following in the footsteps of Josie and the Pussycats, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Scooby-doo and The Cat in the Hat (due out in November.) Filming should start later this month with a planned December 19th release date. It is being produced by Garfield creator Jim Davis, directed by Peter Hewitt (no relation to Jennifer) and is written by Joel Cohen and Alec Sokolow who wrote Toy Story.
