Potter Props Disappearing
April 29th, 2003
Props from the location shoot for the movie Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban have been disappearing as souvenir hunters grab up plastic rocks and polystyrene pumpkins. Shooting has yet to begin in Glencoe, but the location is already drawing a lot of attention, and not all of it welcome. In addition to the thefts there has been some vandalism reported.
But a few missing props won’t put a dent in the Harry Potter fortune. Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling surpassed the Queen of England this year in The Sunday Times’ annual Rich List. With an estimated net worth of 280 million pounds, or nearly half a billion U.S. dollars she is the 122nd richest person in Britain. And that wealth should continue to grow with the success of the Harry Potter series.
The first four Harry Potter novels have sold nearly 200 million copies worldwide, with the fifth novel, Harry Potter and the Order of The Phoenix being released this summer. The first two films made a combined $1.8 billion worldwide, with the third set for a summer 2004 release. And when the series is finally done, it will likely be the most successful global movie franchise ever, a record currently held by James Bond.
