Blu-ray Sales: Wick Lights up the Competition

February 22, 2015

The Blu-ray sales chart was dominated by two new releases. John Wick led the way with 301,000 units / $6.30 million for an opening week Blu-ray share of 57%. The film was an action film with visual style, but not a ton of visual effects, so this is better than expected. Dracula Untold earned second place with 274,000 units / $5.62 million for an opening week Blu-ray share of 54%. It is an action film with lots of special effects, so it was expected to open with a Blu-ray share of more than 50%. The Book of Life landed in third place with 92,000 units / $1.85 million for the week for totals of 259,000 units / $5.26 million after two. Last week's number one Blu-ray, Fury, fell to fourth place with 84,000 unit s/ $1.72 million for the week lifting its running tallies to 516,000 units / $10.50 million. The Best of Me opened in fifth place with 70,000 units / $1.40 million. Its opening week Blu-ray share was just 23%; however, this isn't unexpected, as it is a drama aimed at an adult female audience.

The only other new release of the week to chart was Ouija, which earned eighth place with 49,000 units / $1.12 million. Its opening week Blu-ray share was 32%, which isn't good, but not terrible for a horror film.
