Home Market Numbers: Home Market Slips Despite Hunger's Opening

March 22, 2015

Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1 was the best of the new releases and won the race to top spot on the Blu-ray Sales Chart. Unfortunately, it wasn't strong enough to help the overall Blu-ray sales, which were down across the board. Compared to last week, sales were down 17% in terms of units and 12% in terms of revenue. Compared to last year, sales were down 15% in terms of units and 14% in terms of revenue. You can't blame Mockingjay here, as it topped Catching Fire. There was just no depth this time. As expected, the overall Blu-ray slipped a bit dropping to 52%, but this is still a fantastic number.

DVD sales also fell across the board, but they hung on a little better when compared to last week down 7.5% in terms of units and 9.3% in terms of revenue. Compared to last year, it was a disaster, as sales plummeted by 37% in terms of units and 40% in terms of revenue. The less said about that, the better.

The upcoming new releases are not strong with Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb being the only $100 million hit amongst the fresh offerings. On the other hand, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1 will have its first full week on the home market and that could help. There is some good news, as last year's new releases were even worse with Homefront being the best new Blu-ray and Barbie: The Pearl Princess being the best new DVD.
