DVD and Blu-ray Releases for March 24th, 2015

March 24, 2015

There are three $100 million theatrical hits arriving on the home market this week, which is amazing. However, that's really all that's coming out this week. The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies is the biggest of these three hits, but it wasn't the best. The best is Into the Woods and given the lack of competition, the DVD or Blu-ray is the Pick of the Week.

Actress - Buy from Amazon: DVD
A documentary / drama about Brandy Burre, an actress who retired from acting to be a wife and mother. However, when she tries to return to her career, her home life suffers. The reviews are excellent, but not every critic was comfortable with the mix of documentary and fiction.

Blu-ray Releases - Buy from Amazon: At War with the Army, Best Seller, The Beyond, Convicts, Cover Up, Digging Up the Marrow, The End of Violence, Gates of Heaven / Vernon, Florida, Gone with the Pope, John Ford: Dreaming the Quiet Man, Place to Place, Roommaters / A Woman for All Men, Student Council's Discretion, The Sure Thing, and The Thin Blue Line
Of the wide variety of secondary Blu-ray releases on this week's list, The Thin Blue Line is arguably the best.

Fast and the Furious Limited Collection - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Why? The seventh movie is coming out this year, so why buy a franchise box set now?

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
The final installment in The Hobbit trilogy, which is a followup to the Lord of the Rings trilogy. These films never lived up to expectations and the finale was merely good. The Blu-ray is loaded, so if you liked the movie, it is worth picking up, but it is not Pick of the Week material. Also coming out this week is the trilogy box set.

Into the Woods - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
I am not a fan of musicals. However, one of the few musicals I do like is Into the Woods. The Broadway production has been turned into a movie, but does it live up to the source material? Can it stand on its own? Check out our review to find out.

Liars, Fires, And Bears - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
Nine-year old Eve tries to reconnect with her older brother and she cons Dave, a 30-year old drunk, into helping her. I put in a request to review this film, but the screener hasn't arrived yet. There is only one review on Rotten Tomatoes, but it is positive, so hopefully that's a good omen.

Note: This DVD made its home market debut on the 3rd.

Life Partners - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Two best friends have to deal with a changing relationship when one of them has their first serious relationship and begins spending more time with her boyfriend than her best friend. The film went nowhere at the box office, but is it worth checking out on the home market? Check out our review for my opinion.

Monster High: Haunted - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
This franchise is one of the best-selling direct-to-DVD kids franchises around. I've never gotten a chance to review one of these DVDs or Blu-rays, but clearly there are a lot of fans, because the studio is planning a live action movie for next year.

Mr. Bean: The Whole Bean: 25th Anniversary Edition - Buy from Amazon: DVD
The character of Mr. Bean is 25 years old? Suddenly I feel old.

Mystery Science Theater 3000: XXXII - Buy from Amazon: DVD
I used to get screeners for this show every time there was a release, but it has been years since that was the case. I loved everyone I got to review, but eventually they will run out of prime episodes to release. I don't think it has happened yet, but it will happen.

A Path Appears - Buy from Amazon: DVD
A two-disc, four-and-a-half-hour long documentary series about gender inequality from around the world. There are not a lot of reviews out there, but the ones I've seen have been positive.

Song One - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
A great cast does the best they can with a story that is just too lightweight and predictable to be satisfying.

Note: This Blu-ray made its home market debut on the 13th.

The Sound of Music - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray Combo Pack
This is the second time I've reviewed this movie in five years. Is there anything new on this version? Yes. Is it enough to make it worth the upgrade? Read our review to find out.

Three-Night Stand - Buy from Amazon: DVD
A Canadian comedy about a man who takes his wife to a ski chalet for a relaxing vacation, only to find out it is run by his ex. The reviews are good, but not good enough to find an audience in theaters. Hopefully that will change on the home market.

Unbroken - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
This is Angelina Jolie's second attempt at directing. This film earned great pre-release buzz and there were even some who thought it would be an Oscar contender. That didn't happen. In fact, the film's reviews were barely 50% positive. On the other hand, the film was a much bigger hit at the box office than almost everyone was expecting. The DVD has a 30-minute documentary on the real Louis Zamperini, while the Blu-ray also has deleted scenes, making of featurettes, etc. If you liked the movie, it is certainly worth picking up, but it is not a Pick of the Week contender.
