DVD and Blu-ray Releases for March 31st, 2015

March 30, 2015

This week on the home market is another week that is good on top, but shallow in terms of depth. The number one film of the week is Interstellar which is worth checking out, but not Pick of the Week material. There are a quartet of Pick of the Week contenders, including two limited releases (The Imitation Game - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray and Wild - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray) and two TV on DVD releases (VEEP: Season 3 - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray and Silicon Valley: Season 1 - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray). Of these four, I went with Veep as the Pick of the Week.

Blu-ray Releases - Buy from Amazon: Alice's Restaurant, Allan Quatermain and The Lost City of Gold, The Beat Generation, Cries and Whispers, The Dario Argento Collection, David and Lisa, Day Of Anger, The Facts of Life, Gingitsune: Fox Messenger of the Gods: Complete Collection, Hall and Oates: Live in Dublin, Hoop Dreams, How to Beat the High Cost of Living, Iron Man Trilogy, Miss Marple: Series Two, Night Games, The Quiet Gun, Sankarea: Complete Series (Uncut), The Shanghai Story, The Strange Affair of Uncle Harry, The Stranger at My Door, What Did You Do in the War Daddy?, and Without a Clue
Seems like there's more secondary Blu-ray releases than regular release on this week's list. Of these, Alice's Restaurant is the one I'm most interested in adding to my collection. (On a side note, when I started plugging the secondary Blu-ray releases, "Alice's Restaurant" the song started playing. I'm just about finished and the song still has three minutes left to go. Long song.) However, while I want to own the movie on Blu-ray, I think I'll wait a bit for the 50th anniversary to come around.

3D Blu-ray Releases - Buy from Amazon: Island of Lemurs: Madagascar
Only one 3D release this week and it is a nature documentary.

Gravity - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Really? The film hit the home market barely a year ago, so why is there a special edition coming out this week?

The Imitation Game - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
This film earned stunning reviews and even picked up an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay. The DVD has an audio commentary track, making of featurette, and deleted scenes. Meanwhile, the Blu-ray has highlights from a Q&A session. It is easily worth picking up and the Blu-ray is definitely worth the $2 more than the DVD costs. It is even a contender for Pick of the Week.

Interstellar - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
The latest film from Christopher Nolan, who is one of the most reliable directors working today. Does this film live up to his past work? And is the Blu-ray worth picking up? Read our review to find out.

Island of Lemurs: Madagascar - Buy from Amazon: 3D Blu-ray Combo Pack
An IMAX nature documentary. It earned great reviews, but it is only 40 minutes long, but the Blu-ray costs full price.

Meet the Mormons - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Described by at least one critic as an Infomercial. It is aimed squarely at other Mormons.

Mortal Kombat: Conquest - Buy from Amazon: DVD
This is the series from 1998 that lasted just one season. If you must have everything Mortal Kombat, then it is worth picking up. It was low-budget, but it isn't embarrassing to the franchise.

The Mystery of the Shemitah Unlocked: The 3,000-Year-Old Mystery That Holds the Secret of America's Future, the World's Future, and Your Future! - Buy from Amazon: DVD
A conspiracy theory that I would normally ignore. However, according to Amazon.com, this is in the top five best-selling DVDs of the week. I hope this is an anomaly, because we don't need more conspiracy theories.

Outcast - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Yet another movie that makes you ask the question, "What happened to Nicolas Cage?" Unless you are a fan of bad movies, you can safely skip this movie.

The Rewrite - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
This film hit Video on Demand in February and earned good reviews, but not great reviews. Extras include a making of featurette and two deleted scenes. Call it a solid rental and perhaps worth picking up for fans of the cast.

Silicon Valley: Season 1 - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Co-created by Mike Judge and partially based on his real-life experience. The reviews for season one were incredible and the show even picked up four Emmy nominations. Extras include audio commentary tracks on all eight episodes, as well as a trio of making of / behind-the-scenes featurettes.

VEEP: Season 3 - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
One of the funniest shows on TV at the moment. Julia Louis-Dreyfus earned her third Emmy in a row for her performance in this TV show, which is just another sign of how amazing it is. Extras include audio commentary tracks, deleted scenes, and a behind-the-scenes featurette. Definitely worth picking up and a contender for Pick of the Week.

Wild - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Another film with amazing reviews and even earned Oscar buzz. It wasn't able to live up to the Award Season buzz, but it is still one of the best films of the year. Extras include an audio commentary track, making of featurettes, featurette on the real life Cheryl Strayed, and a lot more. Definitely worth picking up and a contender for Pick of the Week.

Wild Card - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Jason Statham stars in this action remake. The reviews are really bad and it didn't make a peep at the box office. The extras include an audio commentary track and a couple of featurettes. If you liked the movie, it is worth picking up. However, it is probably only going to appeal to hardcore Jason Statham fans.
