The Avengers: Age of Ultron

The Avengers: Age of Ultron remained in first place with ease earning $185.0 million in 91 markets for totals of $770.5 million internationally and $1.143 billion worldwide. The film is now the eighth biggest hit of all time, while two of the films above it are also from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We actually thought that Disney might have overpaid when they bought Marvel. We were wrong. In our defense, no one saw this coming. This past weekend, the film opened in first place in China with $84.84 million for a six-day opening of $154.63 million. China is already the biggest market for Age of Ultron's international run, and it only took four days to get there. Up next for the film is Japan, but the film doesn't open there till July.

Mad Max: Fury Road opened in second place with $65 million in 68 markets. Its biggest market was the U.K., where it opened in second place with $7.11 million in 546 theaters. On the other hand, the film opened in first place in France with $6.43 million on 802 screens. It grabbed second place in South Korea with $5.80 million on 799 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $6.55 million. It led the way in Russia with $5.58 million on 2,511 screens and in Australia with $5.01 million on 542. It managed first or second in most markets, while opening with a similar amount as it made here, when you take into account the relative size of the markets. This suggests it will be a good hit, but not a truly monstrous hit. It should make enough to break even early in its home market run.

Pitch Perfect 2 climbed a spot to third place with $26.9 million in 29 markets over the weekend for a two-week total of $38.1 million. This week the film opened in first place in the U.K. with $7.84 million in 496 theaters. It also earned first place in Germany with $3.62 million on 551 screens. Meanwhile, it added $4.69 million on 403 screens over the weekend in Australia for a two-week total of $14.61 million. It is too early to tell where it will end up, but it appears to be headed towards a Cinderella-like run.

You remember how I said last week that I hoped this week we would have better depth on the international chart? That didn't happen. In fourth place was Furious 7 with just $6.6 million in 66 markets over the weekend. Granted, it has pulled in $1.145 billion internationally and $1.489 worldwide, so the studio doesn't care about the box office numbers, but there's not much for us to say.

Rounding out the top five was The Chronicles of Evil. This film opened in first place in its native South Korea with $5.46 million on 776 screens over the weekend for a total of $6.35 million.
