Benchwarmers Hit Home Run... make that a Ground Rule Double

August 5, 2006

There were only two new release to reach the top five this week but they finished 1-2 with The Benchwarmers leading the way with $9.98 million in DVD rentals. Second place went to Final Destination 3 with $8.29 million during its first week of release. That pushed last week's winner down to third place, but She's the Man held on strong down just 20% to $4.39 million for the week and $9.96 in total. Failure to Launch fell to fourth with $3.52 million during its fifth week of release for a running tally of $33.23 million while Annapolis climbed back into the top five with $1.97 million. That latter film now has $16.79 million in total rentals and should beat its theatre total of $17.12 million very shortly.

The only other new release to chart this week was Ask the Dust as the limited release opened with $670,000, which is almost as much as it earned during its entire theatrical run.

Overall the rentals were able to return to their winning way up 4.1% for the week to $143.4 million. That was up 2.1% from the same weekend last year helping 2006 to $4.6 billion and a 0.9% lead over 2005's pace.

The top two rentals were also the top two in sales, just in the reverse order with Final Destination 3 beating out The Benchwarmers. Third place went to Chappelle's Show - The Lost Episodes, which is a major disappointment as the previous seasons sold much better. She's the Man fell to fourth while Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl dropped to fifth place.

There were four other new releases to charts this week, all of which were from the TV on DVD category. Leading the way in eighth place was The Boondocks - The Complete First Season. Animaniacs - Volume 1 and Pinky and the Brain - Volume 1 finished back-to-back in 11th and 12th place. This isn't surprising since the one was a spin-off of the other and it is unlikely that many people who bought one didn't buy the other. Finally, Tales from the Crypt - The Complete Fourth Season opened its run in 20th place.

The TV on DVD section was again insanely busy this week with four new release in the top five including a new number one, Chappelle's Show - The Lost Episodes with The Boondocks - The Complete First Season opening in second place. High School Musical remained strong in third place on the TV on DVD charts and 10th overall. Animaniacs - Volume 1 and Pinky and the Brain - Volume 1 rounded out the top five.

Tales from the Crypt - The Complete Fourth Season earned seventh spot on the TV on DVD sales chart with the first season of JAG coming in eighth. Three's Company - The Complete Seventh Season rounded out the top ten just ahead of La Femme Nikita - The Complete Fourth Season
