International Box Office: Genisys Reborn in China

August 27, 2015

Terminator: Genisys

Terminator Genisys earned $26.97 million on Sunday in China. That was enough for first place in that market over the entire weekend. In fact, that was enough for first place internationally. Adding in one holdover market, and the movie made $27.4 million in 2 markets for totals of $264.0 million internationally and $353.1 million worldwide. One final note, China is already the film's biggest single market and it could save the franchise and make another installment likely.

Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation slipped into second place with $25.2 million in 64 markets for totals of $280.8 million internationally and $438.3 million worldwide. The film's biggest release of the week was in Italy, where it earned first place with $1.76 million on 620 screens. Its biggest market overall was France, where it added $3.50 million on 719 screens over the weekend for a two-week total of $13.42 million. It has yet to open in China, where it has the potential to top $100 million.

Bride Wars, a Chinese remake of ... The Chinese remade Bride Wars? Why? I don't know if the new version is better than the old version, but the film's box office numbers are great. It earned second place in its native China with $24.22 million during its four-day opening.

Fantastic Four remained in fourth place with $16.2 million in 66 markets for an international total of $80.8 million and a worldwide total of $130.5 million. It has now made more internationally than it cost to make, but that's hardly enough to be a financial success. In fact, it would need more than twice that to break even any time soon. The film's best new market of the week was Venezuela, where it made $1.28 million on just 71 screens. It also earned first place in Russia with $2.42 million on 1,896 screens. On the other hand, it only managed fourth place in South Korea with $1.54 million on 450 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $1.95 million.

Go Away Mr. Tumor earned $13 million in China over the weekend for a total of $67.94 million after 11 days of release.

Inside Out jumped into sixth place, mostly because the rest of the competition fell faster. It earned $10.7 million over the weekend for totals of $347.5 million internationally and $689.9 million worldwide. The film had no major market openings this past weekend, but it did open in first place in the Philippines ($2.09 million on 214 screens) and in Indonesia ($1.17 million on 233).

Veteran remained in first place in South Korea for the third weekend in a row. It pulled in $9.23 million on 906 screens for a running tally of $60.23 million.

Minions fell to eighth place with $8.8 million in 58 markets for totals of $669.4 million internationally and $989.5 million worldwide. By this time next week, the film should be over $1 billion worldwide.

Hitman: Agent 47 opened in ninth place with $8.5 million in 21 markets. The film's best opening came in Malaysia, where it earned first place with $1.12 million on 133 screens. On the other hand, it only managed third place in Mexico with $710,000 on 430 screens.

The Man From U.N.C.L.E. fell to tenth place with $8.0 million in 40 markets over the weekend for a two-week total of $26.0 million. The film reportedly opened in first place in the United Arab Emirates with $676,000 on 46 screens.

Pixels fell out of the top ten, but it did cross $100 million internationally over the weekend and now sits at $105.3 million. Worldwide, it has $173.9 million. If it can crack $200 million worldwide, it will likely break even, eventually.

One last film of note was Assassination. The film slipped to third place in its native South Korea earning $3.27 million on 611 screens for a total of $76.25 million. This puts it past The Avengers: Age of Ultron's final of $75.83 million and into first place in South Korea for the year. ... For perhaps only a little while. Veteran could surpass it by the end of its run.
