International Box Office: Lost Finds Its Way to the Top

October 1, 2015

Lost in Hong Kong

Lost in Hong Kong opened in first place in China and internationally with $106.80 million. This is better than Monster Hunt opened with, so if it has the same legs, the box office record in China will fall for the third time this year. Speaking of records, the overall Chinese box office rose to $5 billion with three months left in the year. This is amazing.

Everest remained in second place with $33.8 million in 63 markets over the weekend for a running tally of $73.7 million after two weeks of release. This is already more than the film will finish with domestically, but it will have to double this number to break even any time soon. The film opened in first place in both Russia ($4.32 million on 1,136 screens) and in France ($2.38 million on 376).

Hotel Transylvania 2 opened in third place with $29.2 million in 43 markets. These were mostly smaller markets in Latin America and South East Asia. Its biggest debut was in Mexico where it pulled in $7.85 million on 3,098 screens. It also earned first place in Brazil ($2.64 million on 925) and in Venezuela ($2.59 million on 112). Argentina was close behind with $2.04 million on 208 screens, including about $100,000 in previews. The film also earned first place in Indonesia ($1.35 million on 256 screens); Philippines ($1.63 million on 193); and Malaysia ($1.16 million on 151).

The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials fell from first to fourth place with $28.4 million in 71 markets over the weekend for a total of $121.8 million internationally and $173.8 million worldwide. It doesn't appear to be on track to match the original movie, but it is still on pace to break even.

The Intern opened in fifth place with $11.78 million in 41 markets. Its biggest opening was in South Korea where it earned fourth place with $2.40 million on 481 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $2.75 million. It placed higher in Russia with $1.36 million on 923 screens, but only managed fifth place in Germany with $1.21 million on 517 screens. On the plus side, the film earned first place in Taiwan with $762,000 on 53. It is still too soon to tell where it will finish, while the wide spread in placements makes predicting its end figure even more difficult.

Inside Out rose to sixth place with $8.0 million in 35 markets for totals of $421.0 million internationally and $774.5 million worldwide. At this pace, even if the film had no markets left to open in, it might still be able to get to $800 million worldwide. In reality, it has yet to open in Germany and China.

The Throne remained in first place in South Korea with $8.54 million on 927 screens over the weekend for a two-week total of $24.26 million. Its sophomore stint decline was just 5%, which bodes well for its future.

Fack ju Göhte 2 remained in first place in Germany with $7.27 million on 823 screens over the weekend for a three-week total of $48.15 million. It also earned first place in neighboring Austria with $596,000 on 79 screens over the weekend for a total there of $4.41 million after three weeks of release. Combined, the film earned eighth place internationally with $7.86 million over the weekend for a total of $52.56 million, putting it about $20 million behind its predecessor.

The Third Way of Love opened in fourth place in China with $7.49 million over the weekend.

Minions rounded out the top ten with $6.8 million in 50 markets over the weekend for totals of $800.7 million internationally and $1.134 billion worldwide. The film has no major markets left to open in, so this is likely the last time we will talk about it here.
