Home Market Numbers Take a Vacation

August 26, 2006

This week's batch of DVDs managed to place a handful of new releases on the chart, including the top two films. R.V. opened in top spot with $9.08 million, a reasonable start given its domestic total and its target audience. Second place went to Scary Movie 4 with $8.46 million, which is a weak start compared to its theatrical run of just over $90 million. Inside Man dipped just 22% to $7.29 million for the week and $16.74 million after two. Inexplicably, Larry the Cable Guy: Health Inspector had the best week-to-week drop-off in the top five down 19% to $4.04 million while its total of $9.10 million is already more than half its domestic run. Rounding out the top five was The Benchwarmers with $3.76 million lifting its total to $26.44 million after four weeks of release.

Two of the three other new releases to chart were direct-to-DVD release, but the best of the rest was Hoot as the film finished in ninth place with $2.00 million. Next up was I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer in 17th place with $1.01 million while The Hard Corps debuted in 21st place with $810,000.

The overall rental business grew by another 1.3% this past week to $143.0 million in total. This was 6.9% higher than the same week last year and helped push 2006's lead over 2005 to 1.6% at $5.0 billion.

The sales chart was very similar to the rental chart with the top three films finishing in the same positions on both. This meant R.V. finished first ahead of Scary Movie 4 and Inside Man. V for Vendetta fell to fourth while Hoot rounded out the top five. Granted, that last film did do better on the sales charts than it did on the rental charts, but it is still not enough to be a success.

There were three other new releases to chart, all from the TV on DVD category. Leading the way was The Simpsons - The Complete Eighth Season in seventh place. Rome - The Complete First Season was in 12th place while Full House - The Complete Fourth Season opened in 15th.

The Simpsons - The Complete Eighth Season led the way on the TV on DVD sales chart, but there's no surprise there. On the other hand, it was a surprise that Laguna Beach - The Complete Second Season climbed into second place. Up next was Rome - The Complete First Season in third while Full House - The Complete Fourth Season finished fourth. Lastly, High School Musical placed fifth on the TV on DVD charts and 16th overall during its eleventh week of release.

The final new release to chart was Hogan's Heroes - The Complete Fourth Season as that set came on 10th place.
