Per Theater Chart: James Can't Take the Spotlight

November 17, 2015

James White

There was only one new release in the $10,000 club and it had to settle for third place on the per theater chart. This left Spotlight in first place with an average of $22,561 in 60 theaters. This is a great result for a film expanding from five to 60 theaters. Brooklyn also expanded, going from five theaters to 23 theaters, while its per theater average remained strong with an average of $20,868. James White was the only new release in the $10,000 club debuting with $12,007 in its lone theater.

There were several other new limited releases that did well. By the Sea earned an average of $9.625 in ten theaters. Its reviews suggest it won't last long. Prem Ratan Dhan Payo earned an average of $8,452 over the weekend for a four-day average of $9,801. Ingrid Bergman - In Her Own Words was close behind with an opening of $8,355 in one theater. Last Woman Standing earned an average of $4,314 in 17 theaters over the weekend for a five-day average of $6.939. Entertainment was well back with an average of $2,566 in two theaters. Steve McQueen: The Man and Le Mans barely avoided the Mendoza Line with an average of $2,040, also in two theaters. Heist wasn't as lucky with an average $1,195 in 24 theaters.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • Suffragette earned more than $1 million over the weekend, which helped it get past $2 million in total. However, its per theater average is barely above $2,000, so its theater count will drop rapidly from now on. This is too bad, as this is a story worth telling. However, you can't erase people of color from history and expect audiences to not react poorly. This is especially true when dealing with progressive issues, like women's rights.
  • On the other hand, Room continues to grow and that helped it hit $2 million over the weekend while further expansion could get it to $3 million this coming weekend.
  • Sicario reached $45 million, which puts it just ahead of McFarland, USA and just behind The Man from U.N.C.L.E. It has a shot at $50 million, but only if it pulls in some major Awards Season nominations.
