Jurassic World

There were five new releases for the week of October 20th that reached the top 30 on the combined DVD and Blu-ray chart for November 1st. This includes three in the top five. However, none of them were able to top Jurassic World. The film remained in first place selling 867,000 units / $15.52 million for the week giving it running tallies of 3.17 million units / $69.97 million after two weeks of release. It was able to jump ahead of The Avengers: Age of Ultron and into fourth place on the yearly chart.

Pixels opened in a distant second place with 303,000 units / $5.72 million. Its opening week Blu-ray share was 47%, which is good. It will likely break even, eventually. Max managed third place with 228,000 units / $3.82 million. Its opening week Blu-ray share was 23%, which is on par with a live action family drama. Southpaw was close behind with sales of 177,000 units / $2.91 million and an opening week Blu-ray share of 50%. That's a surprisingly high Blu-ray share for a drama. The only other holdover in the top five was San Andreas at 111,000 units / $2.59 million for totals of 1.07 million units / $22.76 million.

The Gift opened in ninth place with 56,000 units / $965,000. Its opening week Blu-ray share was 42%, which is good for a thriller. Barbie & Her Sisters in The Great Puppy Adventure was right behind in tenth place with 53,000 units / $647,000. Its opening week Blu-ray share was just 11%; however, while that's low, most similar releases don't even have a Blu-ray release.

It was the week after a monster hit came out, so it is no surprise that the overall Blu-ray sales were down compared to last week. Sales were down 33% in terms of units and 42% in terms of revenue. However, despite this sharp decline week-over-week, the Blu-ray sales this week were still a lot healthier than they were last year. In fact, there were 66% more units sold while the total revenue was 59% higher.

The overall DVD sales were the exact opposite, up compared to last week and down compared to last year. Week-over-week, DVD sales were up 25% in terms of units and 21% in terms of revenue. Year-over-year, DVD sales were down 8.3% in terms of units and 9.3% in terms of revenue.

Because the Blu-ray sales and DVD sales were moving in opposite directions week-over-week and year-over-year, the overall Blu-ray share was dramatically different. This week it was 32%, which was 15 percentage points lower than last week, but 11 percentage points higher than last week. If we just look at the top 30, the overall Blu-ray share was 48%, again, dramatically different to last week (59%) and last year (25%).

Next week's new releases were led by Inside Out. It should easily win the race for the top of the home market chart. There's not much else that will chart. This week last year, the new releases were led by Maleficent, which dominated the DVD, Blu-ray, and Combined charts. It could be a tight race in the year-over-year comparison.
