International Box Office: Major Milestone for Hunger Games

December 9, 2015

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2

It was a milestone weekend for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2, as it crossed the $500 million mark worldwide. Over the weekend, the film pulled in $32.4 million in 93 markets for totals of $296.8 million internationally and $524.2 million worldwide. Its biggest market of the weekend was Germany, where it pulled in $4.77 million on 1,127 screens for a three-week total of $30.53 million. On the other hand, its biggest market overall has been the U.K., where it has made $35.21 million, including $3.38 million in 539 theaters this past weekend. There are rumors that Lionsgate are working on prequels for this franchise. Not sure that's a good idea.

Spectre returned to second place with $23.0 million in 95 markets for totals of $607.5 million internationally and $792.1 million worldwide. There's a solid chance the film has already reached $800 million worldwide, which will likely be the film's last international milestone.

The Good Dinosaur climbed a spot to third with $19.4 million in 46 markets over the weekend for an early international total of $55.4 million. It had no major market openings this past weekend and it is still too early to tell where it will finish. The film will need to reach about $300 million worldwide to have any shot at breaking even any time soon.

In the Heart of the Sea started its international run in fourth place with $17.1 million in 38 markets. This includes a number of major markets, but the results were mixed. It did earn first place in Russia with $2.13 million on 1,689 screens during its four-day opening, while it topped the chart in Italy with $1.77 million on 478. It had to settle for second place in South Korea with $2.21 million on 524 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $2.56 million. The film also claimed second spot in Mexico with $1.87 million and in Brazil with $1.32 million on 496. On the lower end, the film only managed fifth place in Australia with $644,000 in 429 theaters, fifth place in Spain with $604,000 on 392, and seventh place in Germany with $445,000 on 478.

The Martian fell to fifth place with $13.5 million in 18 markets over the weekend for totals of $350.0 million internationally and $570.8 million worldwide. The film made $27.04 million during the full week in China for a 12-day total of $76.17 million.

And that's going to be it, for the most part. We are going to be limiting the International Box Office to the top five films, unless there's something interesting to talk about beyond that.

Speaking of which, Point Break opened in sixth place with $14.1 million in 4 markets. This includes a third place, $12.01 million debut in China. That's not good. On the other hand, it's not really weaker than anticipated.
