International Box Office: Surprise Number One Film

December 16, 2015

Surprise

Surprise You’ll Never Think Of: Journey To The West took $17.54 million over four days, giving it first place in both China and internationally. Journey To The West is one of the most popular Chinese stories ever written and is like the Hamlet of Chinese literature. Hamlet has over 50 feature-length film adaptations and Journey To The West is quickly catching up to that number.

The weekend was a roller-coaster ride for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2. Sunday estimates had it in second place on the international box office. However, Monday finals had it in first place with $17.4 million in 93 markets for totals of $320.1 million internationally and $564.7 million worldwide. Then, final numbers for Surprise pushed it right back into second place. The film likely won't get to $600 million worldwide, which is a major disappointment, but it has already made enough to break even and the studio should be more than happy about that.

The Good Dinosaur remained in third third place with $14.3 million in 48 markets over the weekend for an early international total of $78.2 million. Again, it had no major market openings this past weekend and won't until after Christmas. Perhaps the film will have long legs internationally and will be able to break even sometime on the home market.

Spectre fell to fourth place with $12.9 million in 95 markets over the weekend for totals of $629.8 million internationally and $820.6 million worldwide.

In the Heart of the Sea was close behind with $12.6 million in 53 markets for an early international total of $39.4 million. This is likely more than it will make domestically, but that's still a terrible total for a film that cost $100 million to make.
