International Box Office: The Force Awakens tops $1.5 Billion Ahead of Chinese Debut

Star Wars: The Force Awakens

It's an odd week on the international box office chart, as Star Wars: The Force Awakens is the only Hollywood film in the top five. The latest Star Wars instalment earned $96.3 million over the weekend for an international total of $770.5 million. Its Worldwide total rose to $1.513 billion. At the end of business on Sunday, the film was in third place for the year on the worldwide chart, but that has since changed. It is also in fifth place on the yearly international chart. However, the film opens in China this week and it could jump into third place just due to its opening in that territory.

Speaking of China, Detective Chin Tang opened in first place in China with $66.51 million during its 5-day opening in its native market.

Mr. Six remained very strong in China with $38 million over the weekend for a total of $108.45 million. China is not a market known for its legs, so this is a very good result.

Mojin: The Lost Legend slipped a spot to fourth place with $32 million over the weekend for a running tally of $242.51 million after just 17 days of release. It is now the fifth biggest hit of all-time in China.

Quo Vado? rounded out the top five with 24.17 million on 1,212 screens. To put this opening in perspective, Star Wars: The Force Awakens has made $24.48 million in Italy... in total. That's not the record for an opening film in that market. The record is held by Sole a Catinelle at $25.10 million in 2013.
