International Box Office: The Revenant Rises to First with $33.8 Million

The Revenant rose to first place with $33.8 million in 48 markets for totals of $104.5 million internationally and $223.7 million worldwide. This includes a first place opening in Mexico with $5.3 million, but its biggest market was the U.K. with $5.51 million in 623 theaters for a two-week total of $17.16 million. The film will need to reach at least $300 million to break even any time soon, but that seems likely at this pace.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens slipped to second place with $23.3 million over the weekend for totals of $1.061 billion internationally and $1.940 billion worldwide. The film's biggest market was China, where it earned $8.05 million over the weekend for a running tally of $114.29 million after three weeks of release. Additionally, the film crossed the $100 million in Germany with $2.54 million in 786 screens over the weekend for a total of $102.41 million after six weeks of release.

The Fifth Wave rose to third place with $15.9 million in 33 markets for a two week total of $27.4 million internationally and $37.7 million worldwide. It made almost as much worldwide as it cost to make, which is a good sign for the film's financial success. The film had a lot of success in Latin America breaking records for Young Adult Book Adaptation. This includes Brazil, where it earned first place with $1.62 million on 393 screens. It also earned first place in Russia with $1.89 million on 1,048 screens. On the other hand, it bombed in the U.K. with $711,000 on 338 screens.

The Big Short entered the top five for the first time in its run with $10.1 million in 52 markets for an international total of $30.7 million. The biggest opening of the weekend came from the U.K., where it earned fourth place with $1.86 million in 412 theaters. It also opened in fourth place in South Korea with $1.01 million on 489 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $1.20 million.

Creed rounded out the top five with $9.05 million in 37 markets for totals of $41.9 million internationally and $150.2 million worldwide. It had no major market openings, but it did remain in first place in France with $2.67 million on 453 screens for a two-week total of $7.24 million.
