Limited and VOD Releases: No Shortage of Oscar Nominations

January 29, 2016

World of Tomorrow

It is an incredibly slow week for limited releases. In fact, there are more wide / semi-wide releases than there are limited releases on this week's list. That doesn't mean there is nothing to see. 2016 Oscar Shorts is by far the best limited release of the week and it is also the widest limited release of the week.

2016 Oscar Shorts - Reviews
Since 2006, the short films nominated for Oscars have been released as part of a mini-film festival. It took a few years to catch on with moviegoers, but the past three years, these releases have cracked $2 million at the box office. I suspect this one will do the same. 2016 Oscar Shorts opens tonight in 125 theaters in select cities nationwide.

Lazer Team - Reviews
There is a chosen one. One who will defend Earth from aliens. Only, a group of losers accidentally stumble upon the weapons and suits that were made for the chosen one and now are Earth's only hope. Earth is screwed. This is an interesting setup for a film and the early reviews were positive, but the Tomatometer Score has since slipped to 50% positive. Lazer Team opens on Wednesday with screenings through TUGG. Check out the official site for more details.

Saala Khadoos - No Reviews
A Bollywood film about a former boxer who gets a second chance at glory by coaching the women's boxing team. There are no reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. There are not even any reviews on Now Running. Saala Khadoos opens tonight in 25 theaters in the usual Bollywood hotspots.
