Limited and VOD Releases: Yesterday is the Perfect Day to Watch a Limited Release

February 26, 2016

Only Yesterday

It's Oscar weekend, so obviously there's not many new limited releases worth paying attention to. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny is the biggest, but Only Yesterday is the best.

Aligarh - No Reviews
An Indian film about a professor who loses his job after it is revealed he is gay. Not only does he fight for his job back, but he he challenges India's homophobic laws. There are no reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, but it is earning very good reviews on Now Running.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny - Reviews
The sequel to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. That movie was amazing and is a must own for even casual fans of the genre. On the other hand, there is only one review on Rotten Tomatoes for this movie and the critic is calling it a cash grab. Disappointing. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny opens tonight on IMAX screens, so it might still do relatively well financially, but it won't expand like its predecessor did.

Jack of the Red Hearts - Reviews
AnnaSophia Robb stars as a teenage con-artist, who scams her way into becoming the caregiver for an autistic daughter of a desperate mother. The reviews are mixed, so it will likely have to wait till the home market to find an audience. Jack of the Red Hearts opens tonight in 25 theaters nationwide. Check out the official site for more details.

King Georges - Reviews
Video on Demand
A documentary about Georges Perrier, the owner of one of the most prestigious French restaurants in all of the United States. He decided to retire and sell the restaurant, then he decided to keep the restaurant, but have a new chef take over. However, letting go turned out to be harder than he thought. King Georges opens tonight in three theaters, but Video on Demand is likely where it will find an audience.

The Last Man on the Moon - Reviews
One of the better reviewed new releases of the week. This is a documentary about the last man to stand on the Moon, Eugene Cernan. Fans of documentaries in general, or of the space program in particular, will definitely want to see this one. The Last Man on the Moon opens tonight in just over a dozen theaters nationwide. Check out the official site for more details.

Only Yesterday - Reviews
The latest film from Studio Ghibli released by GKIDS. It technically came out on January 1st, but that was in New York City only. Now it is getting a national release playing in nearly 20 theaters over the week. Check out the official site for more details.

Standoff - Reviews
Video on Demand
A young girl, Ella Ballentine, witnesses an assassin kill someone and runs into the woods to escape. There she finds a cabin and the man inside swears to protect her. The reviews are not good, but good enough for a VOD rental.
