International Box Office: Batman v Superman Maintains First Place with $31.92 million

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice earned first place with $31.92 million in 67 theaters for totals of $486.8 million internationally and $783.4 million worldwide. At this pace, the film will hit $800 million early this weekend, but it looks like $900 million might be out of reach. This is bad news for the studio, as the film reportedly needed to hit $1 billion to break even. On other other hand, if the other films in the D.C. Extended Universe are good, then each time one of them comes out, BvS will gets a small boost on the home market. Maybe that will be enough to break even eventually.

The Jungle Book opened in second place with $28.9 million. One of its biggest markets was India, which makes sense given the film's setting. It pulled in $7.6 million there. However, Russia topped that figure with just under $8.00 million on 1,192 screens. It should have no trouble earning first place on the overall international chart this weekend when it expands.

London Has Fallen roared back on the chart earning third place with $28.5 million in 42 markets for totals of $107.72 million internationally and $168.5 million worldwide. This includes its first place opening in China, where it pulled in $24.57 million over the weekend and $24.69 million including previews. It has almost earned as much internationally as it cost to make, but it needed close to $300 million worldwide to have any real shot at breaking even any time soon.

Zootopia fell to fourth with $22.10 million in 53 markets for totals of $556.5 million internationally and $852.5 million worldwide. The film's biggest market was China where it made $6.60 million over the weekend for a total of $232.94 million after six weeks of release. This put it ahead of The Avengers: Age of Ultron as Disney's biggest hit in that market.

The Huntsman: Winter's War opened in fifth place with $19.82 million in 18 markets. Its biggest opening came in the U.K., where it earned first place with $4.53 million in 524 theaters. However, this is roughly $1 million less than the original managed during its opening there. Likewise, the film earned first place in Mexico with $2.86 million on 717 screens, but this was roughly $2 million behind the first film's opening in that market.
