Weekend Estimates: Jungle Book Still Miles Ahead of Competition

May 1, 2016

The Jungle Book

It’s another bloodbath at the box office this weekend, with the combined efforts of three new wide releases barely earning half of the third weekend’s gross for The Jungle Book. With Captain America: Civil War also posting over $200 million overseas this weekend, Disney’s reign of terror is just getting started.

Jungle Book will be down 29% this weekend to $42.4 million for a gross to date of $253.1 million. That’s the seventh-biggest third weekend for any movie, after the film posted the 32nd-biggest opening weekend. That’s a sign of impressive legs, and sets the film up for a long run in the lucrative summer stretch. The film has also banked $432.7 million overseas so far, putting it close to $700 million to date globally and in fourth place worldwide so far this year. That list is led by Disney’s Zootopia with $931.4 million in total, and the studio’s dominance at the box office is fearsome at the moment. They will retain top spot domestically next week with Captain America, and then could theoretically remain number one until mid-July with the baton passing to Alice Through the Looking Glass, Finding Dory and The BFG when they are released. Alice is the weak link in that chain, The BFG might not open at number one, and Independence Day could knock Finding Dory off top spot, so it would be a surprise if the studio pulled off the feat of thirteen straight weekends at number one, but winning ten out of thirteen weekends is a pretty good bet.

The three new releases left lifeless this weekend are Keanu, which opened with $9.35 million; Mother’s Day, with $8.3 million; and Ratchet and Clank with $4.8 million. None will leave much of a long-term impression, it seems, although Mother’s Day will presumably be helped slightly by, well, Mother’s Day, which is next weekend.

There are two standout films in limited release. The Man Who Knew Infinity is the most impressive overall with a theater average of $14,689 and a projected $88,134 from six theaters in total. The Family Fang has the highest theater average, although from only a single theater, with $15,285 projected for the weekend.
