Theater Averages: Civil War Sets Yearly Mark with $42,390

May 10, 2016

Captain America: Civil War

Captain America: Civil War not only had the best theater average of the weekend, but it also had the best theater average for any film released in 2016. Its average of $42,390 was just ahead of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, while Midnight Special remains the best average for a limited release this year. Other films in the $10,000 club this week include A Bigger Splash, which earned an average of $22,884 in five theaters over the weekend for an average of $27,697 from Wednesday through Sunday. Eva Hesse saw its average rise 8% to $13,816, but it did open on a Wednesday last week, so that likely depressed its weekend numbers last week. Dheepan just made it into the $10,000 club with an average of $10,125 in two theaters.

None of the rest of the new limited releases came close to the $10,000 club. Dark Horse managed an average of $4,613 in three theaters, which is fine for a documentary. Being Charlie struggled with an average of $2,968 in four theaters. The rest of the releases we have numbers for missed the Mendoza Line ($2,000). The Professor: Tai Chi's Journey West only earned $1,744 in one theater, while Elstree 1976 managed an average of $234 in 14 theaters. Not only was the latter a VOD release, but it was also crowdfunded. Crowdfunded movies tend to struggle in theaters, because the people who are most interested in seeing it already paid and got the movie for being a backer.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few of Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • Elvis and Nixon reached $1 million, barely, and that's as far as it will go.
  • Sing Street had the best weekend total during its run so far and that helped it hit $1 million over the weekend. It likely won't expand significantly beyond this point, but it should have no trouble getting to $2 million soon.
  • Miles Ahead reached $2 million since this time last week. Its theater count is already falling, so while there's hope it will get to $3 million, anything beyond is out of the question.
  • Green Room just reached $2 million over the weekend. Its theater count is going to collapse this weekend, but it still has a shot at $3 million. Anything beyond that is a pipe dream.
  • A Hologram for the King has reached $3 million and it might get to $4 million by this time next week.
  • We haven't talked about Spotlight in a while, but since this time last weekend, it reached $45 million in total. This puts it just ahead of McFarland, USA on the 2015 chart.
