Friday Estimates: Apocalypse Okay with $26.4 million

Memorial Day long weekend got off to an okay start on Friday with X-Men: Apocalypse dominating the chart. It pulled in $26.4 million. Two years ago, Days of Future Past opened with $35.51 million on its opening day. If the two films have the same internal multiplier, then Apocalypse will have a four-day haul of $82 million. This film’s reviews will make that number unlikely, but its CinemaScore is an A-, so a complete collapse is also unlikely. Look for an opening weekend of just under $80 million. This won't be enough to get to $200 million domestically, but it is enough to break even early in its home market run.
Alice Through the Looking Glass only managed $9.72 million on Friday. By comparison, Alice in Wonderland earned $40.80 million during its opening day. Granted, it didn’t open on Memorial Day long weekend, so it isn’t a great comparison. Instead, let’s look at Tomorrowland, which opened this weekend last year and earned $9.72 million. That film earned a weekend box office of $33 million / $43 million over the three-day / four-day weekend. Granted, this Alice’s reviews have fallen from mixed to just plain bad at 28% positive, but its CinemaScore is A-, so the target audience liked it a whole lot more than the critics did. It is a sequel, so it opened with more buzz than Tomorrowland, which it will likely just fail to match. Look for an opening weekend of $32 million / $42 million making it the first major Disney release of the year to not be a hit. They’ve broken box office records worldwide this year, so don’t feel bad for them.
Captain America: Civil War didn’t quite top Deadpool on Friday, but will likely get there by the time you read this. Likewise, The Jungle Book will need another day to overtake Zootopia on the yearly chart.
