The Purge: The Election Year

The Purge: The Election Year earned top spot on the theater average chart, at least among those films we don’t have doubts about their box office numbers. It pulled in an average of $11,271, putting it just ahead of The Legend of Tarzan, which earned an average of $10,819. The only other film in the $10,000 club was The Innocents at $10,500 in three theaters.

There weren’t a lot of other new limited releases and only one of them did well. That film was Life, Animated, which pulled in an average of $7,294 in three theaters. The biggest limited release of the week was Our Kind of Traitor, which earned an average of $2,636 in nearly 400 theaters. Roseanne for President! missed the Mendoza Line with an average of $1,670 in two theaters. Satanic only earned an average of $68 in three theaters. The two films that missed the Mendoza Line were playing on VOD, so that is a mitigating factor.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • Genius and The Neon Demon both reached $1 million over the weekend. Neither will get to $2 million.
  • Our Kind of Traitor got to $1 million, if you include the holiday Monday.
  • Swiss Army Man expanded to over 600 theaters this past weekend and that helped it get to $1 million. However, its per theater average is low enough that it won’t expand further.
  • A Bigger Splash topped $2 million early in the weekend, but that’s as far as it will go.
  • A Beautiful Planet is showing the kind of legs only an IMAX edutainment film can produce. It hit $3 million over the weekend and there’s little doubt it will get to $4 million and beyond.
