Friday Estimates: Suicide Squad Leads Slow Night with $6.03 million

August 20, 2016

War Dogs

Suicide Squad led the way on Friday with $6.03 million. This is almost perfectly in line with predictions and it should finish with just a little above $20 million over the weekend.

War Dogs was next with $5.53 million on Friday. This is really bad compared to its Thursday previews. You usually only see a result like this with heavily hyped blockbusters, like Suicide Squad. Its reviews are mixed and it only managed a CinemaScore of B, so it likely won’t have good legs. It will end up with less than $15 million over the weekend, which won’t be enough for second place.

Sausage Party will remain in second place after earning $5.0 million on Friday. This is only 63% less that its opening Friday, which is sadly better than most releases this summer. The film should pull in just over $15 million over the weekend and it is safe to call it a solid midlevel hit.

Ben-Hur was next on Friday with $4.13 million. After a stronger than expected previews, its opening Friday was rather mediocre. The critical response to the film has been terrible, but the its CinemaScore was a solid A minus. Additionally, it is aimed at churchgoers, so it could have a strong Sunday result. Maybe it will bounce back and earn $13 million or more, but barely more than $11 million seems more likely at the moment.

Kubo and the Two Strings landed on fifth place on Friday with $4.09 million. The film has the best reviews of the weekend, an A from CinemaScore, and a family-friendly target demographic. It should have the best internal multiplier of the wide releases this week, and perhaps earn as much as $13 million. This is below expectations, but that’s a common thread for all of the wide releases.
