Weekend Estimates: Don’t Breathe Wins Long, Slow Weekend

September 4, 2016

Don’t Breathe

Don’t Breathe is pulling off an easy win at the box office this weekend, and will become in the process the first horror film to win two straight weekends since Ouija did so, with some help from Halloween, in 2014. With an estimated 3-day $15.7 million, Don’t Breathe is ahead of Suicide Squad, which will stay in the top two for a fifth straight weekend with $10 million or so. Its total stands at $297 million as of Sunday, and will pass $300 million tomorrow. The relative success of those two films prompts a question… where are the new releases?

In short… almost nowhere to be seen.

The two new wide releases are both bombing—although one much more badly than the other. The Light Between Oceans is posting a weak $4.98 million 3-day/$6.3 million 4-day debut, per Disney. Its theater average of $3,323 (over three days) is actually one of the better numbers in the top ten, but its relatively small footprint leaves it in sixth place for the weekend, and it didn’t have much by way of competition.

Morgan is an out-and-out dud, with Fox projecting a $1.96 million 3-day weekend and $2.4 million over four days. With a theater average of $970, it finds itself stranded in 17th place for the 3-day weekend, and will drop to 18th place when all four days are taken into account.

Among all that doom and gloom, there is some more positive news to be found. No Manches Frida will probably be in the $10,000-theater average club this weekend, with Lionsgate projecting a $3.65 million debut from 362 theaters. It will be in 12th place in the chart. Hell or High Water enters the top ten in its fourth weekend with $4.5 million expected from 1,303 theaters. Its theater average stands at $3,454 this weekend—impressive for a film that’s been playing so long.

Also impressing in three theaters is White Girl, which joins No Manches Frida in the $10,000-average-club, with a total of $36,000 from three venues.

Also on the good news front, this Labor Day weekend is up about 10% from Labor Day last year. As the slowest long weekend of the year, that won’t move the dial much on the year-to-year comparison, but a win is always welcome.
