Theater Counts: Magnificent Seven, Storks up against Sully
September 22, 2016
The Magnificent Seven manages the improbable feat of being a remake of a remake, and with a pedigree like that, it’s perhaps no surprise that it’s the favorite to top the box office chart this weekend. It opens in an impressive-for-the-time-of-year 3,674 theaters, according to Sony’s Thursday announcement. Good though that is, two other films will be playing wider…
Sully expands to 3,955 theaters this weekend and continues to be a box office force. Storks is currently the most-anticipated movie on The Numbers, and it will be playing in 3,922 locations this weekend. Its family-friendly nature and lack of competition should give it a healthy run, even if it doesn’t top the chart.
Next weekend is looking more subdued. Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children will be the widest new released, in about 3,4000 movie houses, per Fox. Masterminds is slated for 2,800 theaters, and Deepwater Horizon expected in 3,000. Queen of Katwe expands to 1,500.
