Theater Counts: Miss Peregrine Finds Home in 3,522 Theaters

September 29, 2016

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children

An eclectic bunch of films debuts in theaters this weekend, and the favorite to top the chart will be playing in the most theaters. Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children starts out in 3,522 locations—a very respectable total, but some way short of the 3,922 and 3,674 theaters that launched Storks and The Magnificent Seven, respectively, last weekend. Sully played in a virtually-identical 3,525 venues when it opened a few weeks ago, so there’s scope for a good opening for the Tim Burton fantasy flick.

Also opening this weekend, Deepwater Horizon is starting out in 3,259 movie houses, which is enough for it to be a contender. Masterminds gets 3,042 theaters and isn’t expected to be a threat at the box office, in spite of a promising-looking cast. Also expanding wide is Queen of Katwe, which will play in 1,242 locations and is hoping for a place in the top five.

Next weekend, The Girl on the Train and The Birth of a Nation start Oscar season in earnest. The Girl on the Train is predicted to open in 3,000 theaters, and The Birth of a Nation in 2,000. In both cases, the studios are hoping to enhance the buzz around the films by getting lots of sold out shows. We’ll know how successful that tactic is by this time next week.
