Theater Counts: Girl on the Train Arrives in 3,144 Theaters
October 6, 2016
As expected, The Girl on the Train will open in the most theaters this weekend, and is the film to beat at the box office. Universal is expecting the film to play in 3,144 theaters as of Thursday afternoon, although it might pick up a few more by the weekend. How many of those theaters will play the film all weekend is currently unknown though, since Hurricane Matthew is causing the temporary closure of many movie theaters in Florida, and may prompt further shutdowns in the next few days. How much that will affect ticket sales is something we will only know over time.
The disruption couldn’t come at a worse time for The Birth of a Nation, which started the year as the hottest movie at Sundance, but has struggled in the run-up to its theatrical release. It will be in 2,105 theaters this weekend, and was hoping for a buzz-worthy opening and very strong word of mouth. The former is looking in danger right now, although the latter may help it out.
Looking ahead to next weekend, The Accountant will be debuting in approximately 3,200, and should have a shot at topping the chart, unless Girl on the Train breaks out this weekend.
