Theater Averages: Asura has Maddening Opening with $10,627

Asura: The City of Madness

Asura: The City of Madness was the only film in the $10,000 club with an average of $10,627 in two theaters. Interestingly, Operation Mekong nearly rose to that milestone with an average of $9,511 in 17 theaters.

None of the rest of the new limited releases were even close to the $10,000 mark. Blue Jay only managed $5,159; however, it is already playing on VOD, so this is actually a good start. Being 17 was next with an average of $4,419 in two theaters, while Newtown earned an average of $3,398, also in two theaters. Voiceless was the widest release of the week playing in 100 theaters, but it only managed an average of $2,500. The Greasy Strangler barely avoided the Mendoza Line ($2,000) with an average of $2,045 in 11 theaters. Homeland: Iraq Year Zero was not as lucky earning $560 in its lone theater. Meanwhile, The Hollow earned an average of $237 in 12 theaters.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a couple of Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • The Dressmaker got to $1 million at the box office. However, its per theater average is low enough that it will start losing theaters making other milestones harder to get to.
  • Queen of Katwe got all the way to $5 million this weekend. $10 million is very unlikely, but not entirely out of the question. Additionally, it could become a sleeper hit on the home market.
