International Box Office: Nothing Strange About Doctor’s $86.0 million International Debut

November 3, 2016

Doctor Strange

Doctor Strange started its international run in first place with $86.0 million in 33 markets. This is 49% better than Ant-Man’s debuts in these markets. If the film does as well here, it would earn $85 million this coming weekend. The film’s biggest international market was South Korea, where it debuted with $12.95 million on 1,500 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $18.05 million. It dominated the weekend box office there. It earned an easy first place in the U.K. with $11.29 million in 602 theaters. The film also opened in first place in France ($5.7 million); Australia ($4.90 million); Germany ($4.8 million); and Mexico ($4.67 million). If the film does as well during the rest of its international run, it will earn just over $500 million internationally. However, since its reviews are better than Ant-Man’s reviews were, it could have even better legs. We will know more this time next week.

Trolls rose to second place with $30 million in 40 markets for a two-week total of $61.7 million. Its biggest new market was China, but it only managed $4.80 million in that market. Granted, China isn’t a good market for digitally animated films, but even so, this is a bad start. It earned first place in Russia with $3.98 million on 1,216 screens over the weekend. This is a little better than its opening in China and it suggests the film will be a $100 million hit here. The film’s best holdover was the U.K., where it dropped 40% to $3.96 million over the weekend for a total of $17.02 million after two weeks of release.

Inferno slipped another spot to third place with $29.1 million in 61 markets over the weekend for an international total of $132.7 million. The film cost $75 million to make and at this pace it will earn enough internationally to pay for all of that. The film earned first place in China with $12.79 million and in Japan with $3.3 million.

Jack Reacher: Never Go Back fell from first to fourth with $11.6 million in 46 markets for totals of $54.2 million internationally and $93.9 million worldwide. It had no major market openings this past weekend, which explains the sharp drop-off, but its international run isn’t over yet. Openings in Germany, Spain, and Japan next weekend should help it bounce back.

Ae Dil Hai Mushkil was a surprise entrant in the top ten on the domestic weekend chart and it earned fifth place internationally with $10.7 million in 13 markets. This includes $7.5 million in its native India.

Finding Dory is in a virtual tie with Zootopia on the yearly worldwide chart with $1.021 billion. It also climbed into 25th place on the All-Time worldwide chart.

One last note, The Secret Life of Pets topped $500 million internationally and it is about to overtake Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice on the yearly worldwide chart.
