International Box Office: Strange More Incredible Than The Hulk with $118.7 million

Doctor Strange

Doctor Strange added $118.7 million in 54 markets for totals of $240.4 million internationally and $325.5 million worldwide. It has already overtaken The Incredible Hulk in the MCU and is rapidly closing in on Captain America: The First Avenger. This weekend, the film debuted in first place in China with $44.12 million, including some previews, as well as in Brazil with $7.9 million. The film also expanded wide in Russia earning $8.49 million over the weekend for a total of $15.63 million. On the downside, the film has already opened in all major markets, except for Japan, where it doesn’t open until January. With what it has pulled in so far, anything less than $600 million will be seen as troubling, while anything more than $750 million will be seen as a success.

Trolls remained in second place with $30 million in 67 markets for an international total of $104 million after three weeks of release. The film’s best opening was in Mexico where it earned $2.68 million, which is much weaker than its debut here.

The Accountant was next with $13.1 million in 63 markets for an international total of $38.5 million. It is struggling internationally, but it has made enough domestically that breaking even is all but given. For example, the film only managed third place in the U.K. with $2.02 million in 569 theaters. Likewise, it earned third place in Australia with $1.21 million on 293 screens. It was relatively better in Mexico with $1.47 million, but again, this was only enough for third place.

Inferno was next with $10.63 million on 6,329 screens in 79 markets for totals of $158.79 million internationally and $184.76 million worldwide. Its only new market was Hong Kong, where it earned second place with $825,000 on 114 screens. Its best market was Japan, where it earned third place with $1.68 million on 372 screens over the weekend for a two-week total of $8.51 million. At this pace, it will earn enough internationally to cover its production budget, so it could get another installment in the franchise, one that barely opens wide here. This is more likely, as Sony has had a bad year.

Ouija: Origin of Evil rounded out the top five with $8.3 million in 48 markets for an international total of $33.1 million. This is more than the film has earned domestically and possibly enough for the film to break even. It depends on how much it cost to advertise and distribute. The film opened in second place in Indonesia with $1.6 million on 200 screens, but flopped in France earning eighth place with just $982,000 on 171.

Disney made big news last week as it topped $6 billion worldwide for the first time in its history and only the second time ever. It is looking to beat Universal’s record of $6.89 billion and I can’t imagine it won’t get there. Doctor Strange will earn another $300 million, minimum, while Moana should push it over the top. And that’s before Rogue One: A Star Wars Story opens in December.

One last note, Finding Dory overtook Zootopia for 24th place on the All-Time worldwide chart and this time next week it should be ahead Alice in Wonderland, while it might last long enough to climb past Star Wars Episode One: The Phantom Menance.
