Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk

Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk earned first place on the theater average chart over the weekend earning an average of $57,065 in two theaters. That’s the good news. The bad news is its reviews suggest poor word of mouth and difficulty expanding wide this coming weekend. Elle opened in second place with an average of $25,467, also in two theaters. Loving remained in the $10,000 club for the second weekend with an average of $11,149 in 46 theaters. It still has room to grow. Doctor Strange was right behind with an average of $11,069. The final film in the $10,000 was the biggest new release of the week, Arrival, which earned an average of $10,390.

None of the other the new limited releases came close to the $10,000 club. The best of the rest was Disturbing the Peace with an average of $5,454 in two theaters. Kiki, Love to Love earned $3,954 in one theater, while National Bird was next with $3,030, also in one theater. No Pay, Nudity missed the Mendoza Line with an average of $1,074 in three theaters. Finally there was The Monster with an average of $368 in 18 theaters. However, it was playing on Video on Demand, so its theatrical numbers are of no significance.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a couple of Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • The Handmaiden reached $1 million just before the weekend. It has a strong shot at $2 million.
  • I’m Not Ashamed got to $2 million, barely, but it won’t get any further.
  • A Man Called Ove topped $2 million before the weekend and it will have no trouble getting to $3 million before long.
  • Ae Dil Hai Muskkil hit $4 million over the weekend and while it won’t get to $5 million, this is still a great run for a Bollywood film.
  • Moonlight also hit $4 million over the weekend, but it will get to $5 million before Friday. It might even get to $10 million, with some Awards Season help.
