Lion

Lion led the way on the theater average chart this week with an average of $30,840 in four theaters. Its reviews are great and it could become a sleeper hit throughout the Christmas holidays. Up next was Manchester by the Sea with an average of $25,541 in 48 theaters. It still has plenty of room to expand and its Awards Season buzz is growing. Miss Sloane opened with an average of $19,932 in three theaters. This is good, but not good enough to think it will expand truly wide. The overall number one film, Moana, was next with an average of $14,615. The final film in the $10,000 club was Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them with an average of $10,880.

The best of the rest of the new limited releases was Dear Zindagi. This film earned an average of $6,350 in 154 theaters and an average of $9,072 from Wednesday through Sunday. Mifune: The Last Samurai and Always Shine had nearly identical results of $4,296 and $4,211 respectively. They were both playing in only one theater. The final film we have results for is Evolution, which earned an average of $2,309 in three theaters. This isn’t bad for a film that is playing on VOD.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a couple of Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • Dear Zindagi earned more than $1 million during its five-day opening. It will get to $2 million, but $3 million might be out of reach.
  • Nocturnal Animals also got to $1 million over the weekend, plus it has room to grow.
  • Manchester by the Sea earned more than $1 million over the weekend reaching its first major milestone along the way. It’s becoming a major Awards Season contender, so it could expand truly wide if it earns more major nominations and wins.
  • A Man Called Ove made it to $3 million over the weekend, but it is losing theaters, so it very likely won’t get to $4 million.
  • Loving also earned more than $1 million over the weekend, helping it top $4 million overall. It too has room to grow and is being boosted by Awards Season success.
  • On the other hand, Denial got to $4 million and that’s the last milestone it will reach.
