Thursday Box Office: Rogue One Bounces Back with $16.77 million, while most New Releases Tumble

December 23, 2016

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story grew by 12% to $16.77 million on Thursday for a first-week total of $222.00 million. This shows that it was hit by new releases on Wednesday, at least a little bit. It is impossible to compare this day to The Force Awakens, because this day in its run was Christmas Eve. For the record though, The Force Awakens fell by 28% to $27.40 million on that day and had pulled in $390.86 million during the same time period.

Sing posted $9.6 million on Thursday, down 13% from its opening day. The film is about $4 million above its expected pace, while its reviews have clicked up to 71% positive, so all signs for the weekend are positive.

It took just one day for Passengers to climb over Assassin’s Creed. Both films fell, but Passengers fell 22% to $3.22 million on Thursday for a two-day total of $7.33 million. This is still a deep decline, but not a surprising one given its reviews and the B it got from CinemaScore. It likely won’t have a good weekend.

Assassin’s Creed fell 28% to $2.87 million on Thursday, but its running tally is still ahead of Passengers at $7.49 million. Awful reviews, a weak CinemaScore of B+, and the Fanboy Effect from the video game are hurting its legs.

Moana rose by 21% to $2.57 million on Thursday for a total of $173.03 million after 30 days of release. Its family-friendly nature should help it thrive over the weekend and it could still be in wide release well into January.

We do have the numbers for Why Him?’s midnight previews and they are okay at $975,000. This is a little ahead of the $950,000 Office Christmas Party earned and that film is well on its way to becoming a solid midlevel hit. The two films even have similar reviews, although Office Christmas Party might benefit from a more direct Christmas connection.

One last note, Patriots Day fell more than 50% from its opening day. This is abysmal for a limited release and it could be a sign that audiences don’t like the movie nearly as much as critics do.
