Notes and Reactions...

  • There’s a good news / bad news situation here. There are not a lot of surprises as most of the films earning the most nominations also earned a ton of previous nominations. On the one hand, this means I was able to cut and paste a lot of the list. On the other hand, this means I don’t have a lot to talk about.
  • La La Land has been dominating the early Awards Season, so picking up 11 nominations isn’t a shock. The only issue going forward is potential backlash. Arrival did better than usual, but that’s because this is the first set of awards with plenty of technical categories it could clean up on. Finally, Nocturnal Animals did better than its reviews suggest. A Tomatometer Score of 72% positive just isn’t award-worthy. Then again, it’s earned plenty of previous nominations.
  • If I, Daniel Blake doesn’t win Best British Film, I will be stunned, as it picked up more other high prestige nominations than any other British film this year. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them also earned four other nods, but most were technical in nature.
