2016 - Awards Season: DGA - Nominations

January 12, 2017

Lion

The last of the Directors Guild of America nominations were announced and the Oscars are really shaping up to be a one-movie show. That movie is Deadpool. I’m joking of course, but it did get yet another nomination. At this point, it could earn a Best Picture Oscar nomination and I wouldn’t be surprised. The film that is dominating Awards Season is La La Land and frankly I’ve lost count of the number of nominations it has received.

The categories and nominees are...

Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film

Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Documentary

First-Time Feature Film Director

Notes and Reactions...

  • The usual suspects are all present in the Best Director category, including La La Land, which has to be seen as a favorite to clean up on Oscar night.
  • Speaking of Oscars, Deadpool has to be considered a favorite to earn at least one Oscar nod, possible a few of them. It would be great if comic book movies were taken seriously by Awards Season voters, so hopefully this is a start.
  • Garth Davis earned two nominations for Lion. The film seems like a lock for best first feature film as a result.
  • All five documentaries are on the Oscar short list, so any one of them could win in the end. Also, all of them have earned at least one previous major nomination. That said, I think O.J.: Made in America, which is a TV miniseries, is the favorite. (It had a limited Oscar-qualifying theatrical run before airing on TV.)
