Theater Counts: Rings and The Space Between Us Both Open in Less Than 3,000 Theaters
February 2, 2017
Screen availability is tight at multiplexes right now, with plenty of Oscar-nominated films looking to take advantage of the last few weeks before the awards. So it’s a challenging time to be releasing more mainstream fare, but, even so, it’s fairly surprising to see Rings and The Space Between Us debut in less than 3,000 theaters this weekend.
Rings comes closest, with 2,931 locations, while The Space Between Us will play in 2,812 theaters. That leaves Hidden Figures as the most widely distributed title right now. It adds another 50 venues this week, to claim 3,401. Behind it, three other films are all gaining theaters: Split, A Dog’s Purpose, and La La Land, which will play in 3,236 theaters in its ninth weekend in release.
All these films will be blown away next weekend, when two juggernauts arrive in time for Valentine’s Day. Warner Bros. announced today that The Lego Batman Movie will open in an estimated 4,000 theaters. Fifty Shades Darker will get around 3,700, according to Universal. Also coming out next weekend, and getting a more modest 2,900 theaters is Lionsgate’s John Wick: Chapter Two.
