Friday Estimates: Rings Wins Friday with $5.2 million, Split will Repeat over Weekend

February 4, 2017

Rings

It will be a close race this weekend with Rings topping the chart on Friday with $5.6 million, putting it just ahead of Split … for now. Its word-of-mouth is terrible. It did get its first positive review, but its Tomatometer Score is just 6% positive, while it earned a C minus from CinemaScore. On the positive side, overall this is actually better than predicted, and it looks like it will earn close to $14 million, instead of just under $13 million.

Split earned second place with $4.8 million on Friday, which puts it on pace for just under $14 million over the weekend. That means we could have a virtual tie on top of the chart. The film will have $98 million by the end of business on Sunday and should hit $100 million this coming Tuesday.

Hidden Figures is playing counter-programming to the Super Bowl and that appears to be working. The film earned third place on Friday with $3.1 million, which is only 17% lower than last Friday. It should pull in just over $10 million over the weekend, putting it just ahead of La La Land on the 2016 chart.

A Dog’s Purpose also held on better than expected, earning $2.8 million on Friday and will likely post $10 million over the full weekend. Clearly families are the target audience here, so going up against the Super Bowl is helping, not hurting. At the very least, it is helping more than the terrible reviews are hurting.

The Space Between Us is bombing harder than expected with just $1.4 million on Friday. Its reviews are 14% positive, but its CinemaScore is an A minus. Clearly this film is appealing to families and no one else. It will earn between $3 million and $4 million over the weekend, which is a disaster.
