Friday Estimates: Fifty Leads Fantastic Friday with $21.5 million

February 11, 2017

Fifty Shades Darker

Fifty Shades Darker led the way on Friday with $21.5 million. Earning first place is both expected and a little troubling, but more on the latter below. The film’s legs will be shorter over the weekend than its predecessor’s were, because it doesn’t have Valentine’s Day to boost its Saturday numbers. However, despite earning much worse reviews than the original film, its CinemaScore is a B plus, up from the C plus that the original managed. This could help its overall legs. Look for $48 million over the weekend and a total of over $100 million.

The Lego Batman Movie opened in second place, which was expected. It is a family film after all. However, it only managed $15.0 million on Friday, which is substantially lower than anticipated. It does have 91% positive reviews and an A minus from CinemaScore, so it should bounce back in Saturday and earn first place with $54 million to $55 million over the weekend. This is much lower than expected and somewhat disappointing. It still has a chance at $200 million domestically, if families turn out to watch the film more than adult fans of animation do.

The third wide release of the week, John Wick: Chapter Two opened with $11.0 million on Friday. Its reviews are 90% positive, while its CinemaScore was an A minus. The original John Wick earned 85% positive reviews and a B from CinemaScore. It has a shot at $30 million over the weekend, but $28 million is a safer bet.

On the limited release front, Jolly LLB 2 opened with $195,000 in 173 theaters. This is good, for a Bollywood release. Meanwhile, A United Kingdom opened with $18,389 in 4 theaters.
